LA is facing a major provider shortage, with 81% of the state being federally designated as a healthcare professional shortage area. Additionally, Louisianians have some of the highest rates of chronic diseases and other healthcare problems in the nation. Highly educated and skilled PAs (physician assistants) stand ready to answer the call but are restricted by unnecessary and outdated practice barriers. It’s time that we modernize Louisiana’s PA practice laws and strengthen access to safe, high-quality healthcare teams.

Legislators need to hear the facts on HB 702!

This legislation will:

  • Update the MD/PA relationship from “supervision” to “collaboration” to accurately reflect the realities of day-to-day MD/PA team practice
  • Retain the scope of practice of the PA as limited to the actions they are licensed or otherwise authorized to perform and delegated to them by the collaborating physician
  • Preserve the requirement for PAs to be able to contact collaborating MD at all times
  • Maintain flexibility in MD/PA teams by determining level of collaboration at the practice site
  • Refine the MD/PA collaboration ratio as 1:8 at one time in order to improve staffing flexibility in large practices
  • Strengthen requirements to practice as a PA by eliminating temporary work permits
  • Clarify legal liability for care provided by PAs
  • Allow LPNs to accept orders from PAs

This legislation will NOT:

  • Allow a PA to practice independently without physician collaboration
  • Expand the scope of practice of PAs
